Garbage (And a Giveaway!)

By |2014-03-25T21:10:24+00:00March 25th, 2014|Uncategorized|41 Comments

I’ve mentioned my childhood a few times here, but I suspect I haven’t let on just how high a degree of unusual-ness I grew up in. It was up there. There were seven of us, so we required a large vehicle. Back when other folks were beginning to drive super-cool Suburbans, we cruised in an enormous, bright red passenger van. The Big Red Van (in its glory days.) [...]

Sewers, Sinuses and Fighting in the Bathroom

So here’s how my week has been (summed up in a handy-dandy math problem): Dr. Daddy taking one last look at those massive tonsils. Hattie + Tonsillectomy = Six long, sleepless nights and fairly miserable days with a little girl whose throat is so sore even ice cream hurts going down. Add that to: Owning a rental property + Water lines that bust, sewers that back up, and [...]

Highs, Lows and All the Junk In Between

By |2014-03-11T21:50:01+00:00March 11th, 2014|Uncategorized|5 Comments

Last week, a dear fellow-mommy friend of mine dropped off her youngest with me and headed off to a hair appointment alone. (So it was already a pretty big day, really.) I took our gaggle on walk. And she got a phone call. The caller identified herself as someone my friend and I had just been discussing. We had never met this woman, but she was a big, important, practically [...]

Floppy Arms, Books of Rules and a Tiny Pair of Undies

By |2014-03-05T09:21:02+00:00March 5th, 2014|Uncategorized|6 Comments

A friend and I met for a coffee a few weeks ago. It was blissful to get away from our messy houses and the general chaos of life with small children, but, alas, our conversation did not stray far from messy houses and life with small children. Sigh. We sat there for nearly two hours, dissecting our various parenting challenges, and at the end of nearly every paragraph of conversation, [...]

The Worst Thing (and the Best)

By |2014-02-25T13:38:54+00:00February 25th, 2014|Uncategorized|8 Comments

This is the one I didn’t want to write. It’s too hard. And it’s too awful. It’s too big for me. It comes after a week in the news that strikes every parent at the core of their deepest, darkest fears. It comes after everyone in world who could or would pray, prayed, and social media blasted its Amber Alerts and all the trained professionals with their years of experience [...]

Completely, Absolutely and OUTLANDISHLY Unequally Yoked

By |2014-02-18T14:00:33+00:00February 18th, 2014|Uncategorized|8 Comments

A few days ago, in the car, in a completely random moment of perfection, Hattie calls to me from behind. “Mommy?” “Yes, hon?” “Mommy, I love Jesus.” ~ I don’t know what your moments are with your children. Those moments when you feel your heart squeeze and then nearly explode with happiness. Mine don’t require much. (I suspect yours don’t either.) A nursing infant playing with my hair. One of [...]

Texting, Jihad and the Church…and How it’s All sort of Connected

By |2014-02-12T14:14:14+00:00February 12th, 2014|Uncategorized|5 Comments

A few years back, when I was still living in Pioneer days and the rest of the world had moved on to fancy-schmancy smartphones and texting, I got a Facebook message from an old friend. (Okay, so I wasn’t entirely living like a Pioneer.) She had obviously sent it from her iPhone, but I didn’t understand that kind of thing yet, so when the message read like this: Hi, I’ve [...]

It’s (Not) About Me.

A few years ago, we were on our way to Branson, Missouri to visit the fabulously fantastic Silver Dollar City when Edy got carsick.  (Yes, Silver Dollar City really is that wonderful. Seriously, I want to retire there. Josh will grow a big beard and work in the carpenter’s shop, and I’ll wear an old-timey dress and get to make (and eat) cinnamon rolls in the bakery all day. It [...]

The Quiet

By |2014-01-29T09:42:42+00:00January 29th, 2014|Uncategorized|8 Comments

Long, long ago, in a land far away (or so it seems now), Josh and I were dating.  We were eating at our favorite restaurant—the one with tiny tables, checkered tablecloths, low lights and a fellow in the corner strumming his guitar.  We were making the usual googly-eyes at each other when I noticed a couple a few tables away.  They were older, probably in their sixties, and all the time [...]

The Aftermath

By |2014-01-21T10:30:54+00:00January 21st, 2014|Uncategorized|3 Comments

The surgery went well.  So well.  It was fast and smooth and confirmed that we had done the right thing for our little girl. And Hattie was happy. She woke up from the anesthesia happy. She cuddled in our arms afterwards happy. When they gave her juice and pudding and a movie, she was I-never-want-to-leave-the-hospital happy. I was so thankful. Once again, God had been so good to us. I [...]
